Based in the Oxfordshire, I make gardens that are unashamedly romantic. Layered, generous, atmospheric — but which sit comfortably in their surroundings, as though they had always been there.

 

Every garden begins with the place itself: the fall of the land, the local stone, the architecture and history of the site. I take time to understand a garden's context before a line is drawn, so the result feels inevitable rather than imposed.

 

Naturalistic planting, strong bones and gentle abundance.

 

Craft runs through everything. I love traditional techniques and honest materials: reclaimed stone, weathered wood, wrought iron, the way good materials weather and improve with age. Every site has its own vernacular; the stone,  the plants, the character and atmosphere and the skill is surely to listen.

 

For all its romance, this is a practical business. Every garden is shaped by the people who live in it. How you entertain, whether children will run around the lawn, how much gardening you honestly want to do. I take as much pleasure in solving the practical as the poetic.

 

The practice is small at present, just me. The person you meet on the first site visit is the same one drawing the plans and standing in the border on planting day.
